2025 Digital Advent #14: pluto22

Hello everyone, happy Sunday, another week comes to a close. We are 18 days closer to a new year. Today's selected website may appear simple at first but is filled with keen, honest insights that I really value about life, the internet, music, culture, and more. I know everyone likes the kind of writing they like and there's no one right way to do it but I do think that many would really enjoy Frances', of pluto22.neocities.org, writing. Without further ado...

How did I find this website?

We were mutuals on Neocities for some time but I got to know more about Frances when they submitted their responses for the summer issue of the pixel club zine I was doing, CDwORLD inprint. I realized we had a lot of overlap in taste and when I browsed more of their pages, a lot of thought also resonated with me deeply.

Check this website out if you like...

If you like often shorter, sort-of stream of consciousness (don't take me wrong, the quality is superb but also quite raw) text, Frances' site should be of interest to you. I follow a lot of micro or mini blogs on people's sites, it's a good way to check in and get a peek inside another person's life but Frances' is probably the one I am always anticipating most. I'm being pretty geeky but parts that maybe weren't even meant to be a poem, read like one to me (it's cold outside, too cold to open the window more than a crack, the radiator is hot, too hot to sleep under the covers). Frances also has an extensive and up-to-date media log (couldn't be me...), a log dedicated specifically to live recordings of Elliott Smith (in my top three singer-songwriters ever, only to be beaten by Jason Molina and Sufjan Stevens), and a list of collected CDs. Frances also used to host figwasp, a weekly radio-style listening party of some great tracks and an album in it's entirety.

My favourite page on the website is...

So, I obviously love the blog but I also really love two more pages: the pretty things page and the zines. The pretty things are just a collection of observations that made some kind of positive impact on Frances, usually something that may seem benign and small but is special. There's lots there and has had me appreciate the small and mundane a lot more. When the train was broken down I had to take the bus to class and when two bus drivers were going the opposite way and would pass each other by, they would often wave to each other. Second is the kbos zine which has two issues as of now: it's beautiful in design and has media recommendations from another human person, my favourite stuff.
