Hello there. I've been gone a while this Blaugust, it's been a very hectic week and I haven't had time to make any posts or even catch up with my fellow Blauggers. I still feel pretty good about getting to 15 posts anyway so I'm sticking to my pace. Something easy today, fancomics.
I'm sure you can guess what a fancomic is, but for the sake of accuracy it's an unofficial comic set in an existing media property or using existing characters from that media property. It's fanfiction but with pictures. I've made fancomics as a kid but never got back into it as I got older though I've always been drawn to the medium. Why not write a fanfic? I just don't think I have the skills to write about stuff that I didn't make up, it takes a certain style to write good fanfic. I feel like I can explore my ideas about an IP much better through drawing.
So, here's some media that I would consider making fancomics about:
Titanfall. I know, it's not like there is some very genius story-telling or political intrigue going on in Titanfall but I am totally in love with the world of the game. It's something about the factions, the guerilla style conflicts, and the incredibly cool tech. There's even characters that I like a lot: Barker, BT, and Viper (RIP) are my faves. Technically the events after the final mission is whatever happens in Apex and although I was actually quite a fan of Apex back in the day I'm kind of sick of it and I don't like what it did to the world of Titanfall. If I ever do make a comic I'd still have Jack Cooper be the main character (the James Holden of it all) but I'd explore the factions some more with existing and maybe some new characters. There would be an epic war against the IMC, it makes sense after the Ark goes missing at the end of 2.
Star Wars (specifically the Clone Wars era). Ever since I was a kid I've been a Star Wars fan, but it all started with the Clone Wars. Yes, the 2002 Attack of the Clones was what got me crazy about Star Wars. Blasphemy! I'm so over the haters. Both the Clone Wars CG movie and the show were literally my life since 2008. Something about this era in the franchise is just really near and dear to me. Throughout my life I've never really had many Star Wars OCs but if I were to make a fancomic it would follow a cast that I made up. I already know I'd be interested in writing a Kage character due to their ability to form memories since birth. How wack! I also love the dynamics between padawans and masters, they can be nurturing and super hurtful at the same time.
Motorcity. Where do I even begin? My ultimate obsession. I don't think any comic iteration of Motorcity could ever do the animation justice but dammit I need something that sort of resembles season 2. Yes, even if I have to do it myself. Imagine if we find out what's really outside of Detroit or if Kane really is 100s of years old. The Titmouse team had so many good ideas for season 2 that keep me awake at night. This is the one that I'm most likely to do at some point in my life.
Trick Or Treat. Here's the main plot: Sammie Curr is Eddie Weinbauer's idol but he dies in a strange and morbid way. However! His spirit haunts a cassette tape that allows him to wreck havoc on everyone. Eddie obviously stops him in the movie but how cool would it be if he became a sort-of musical ghost detective while navigating high school? Different dead pop and rock stars keep returning from the grave to haunt their fans and only Eddie knows how to combat them. Maybe it's just me. It's just such an underrated movie.
The Faculty. I'm probably making everyone sick by non-stop shilling The Faculty. But I just love that movie and I could totally see a part 2 in comic form. Another new girl arrives at school... but she's not the alien! It would also be perfect to fix the garbage that was Casey/Delilah and Miss Burke/Zeke. I think it also has such pleasing toned down colours that would translate great to a very stylized comic.
Stick It. Weird pick, huh? I'm just a sucker for coming of age stories set in the late 90s and early 2000s. Something about the cast and the drama of sports is so fun to me. I'd have the story keep following Haley through her return to glory with all the girls by her side, especially Joanne.
By the way, I've got 5 out of 15 posts done as of today! Woohoo! That's a third! Did you or do you write fanfiction or draw fancomics? If you could just buy and keep making a media property, what would it be?
