Mermay 2025 Misc

I'm wrapping Mermay up early this year but even though I didnt go the traditional route of a drawing a day and I didn't hit every goal for my comic project, I still got a lot done and I'm happy with that. It's okay if the plans starts shifting, as long as youve created something by the deadline. Atleast I think that's fine for personal projects. Here's a few miscallenous illustrations that I did of the Mermay project characters:

Mermay 2025 Day 8

I have not been feeling really good about my art the past few days but I'm still trying to get as much of the character concepts done as I can so I have at least something to work with. Today's character is the rival, the antagonist of my story: Kiri. He was actually Nei's friend until an incident occurred between them that made them into enemies. 

Day 8.

Kiri is an edge lord, he's also a half-mermaid and has a pretty troubled home life. I actually drew him in a prom outfit despite not having drawn the other characters in theirs. I guess I just had a vision of what I wanted his look to be so I just put that down. I'm actually really unhappy with how the body turned out but I'm pretty satisfied with the face.

Mermay 2025 Day 7

Hey, I've been too busy the past few days to finish this last drawing. Honestly, I'm not happy with it at all but I still feel like the attitude of the character comes through. 

    Day 7.

Hadrian is one of the only full-humans in the cast. He's an older mentor type to both Mona and Nei. He's originally Nei's co-worker and later a good friend. He's obsessed with 80s movies and music and is totally full of himself. He's a little cool. He has some past rivalries that he never got over.

Next, I'll be trying to draw Nei's ultimate surfing rival, Kiri. Stay tuned.

Mermay 2025 Day 6

Mona is a runaway princess, her arrival to the island at first is mysterious and unclear. Soon she befriends Seren and Nei, and another mentor-like character (coming soon!). As a mermaid she has magical powers, but I haven't thought what they are gonna be yet.

Mermay 2025 Day 5

I had a few busy days but finally finished Mona! She's a mermaid princess who doesn't speak human, so at first she spends a lot of time learning the human way and being mysterious. Kind of like Ariel. Her symbol is the moon, it's all pearly and velvet-like. She has mostly dark and rich colours as a mermaid but mixes it up a bit more when she's a human.

Day 5.

Since she's new to our world, some of her fashion and lifestyle choices are a bit weird. She loves those jelly shoes and weird foods. Her second outfit is a ripped version of her mermaid outfit as she has washed up on shore after a serious storm.

Mermay 2025 Day 4

Hey! Here's day 4. This is the most mahou shoujo I have gotten so far. Seren's mermaid form is her ultimate girly look, she finally gets to give in to the magic and put practicality on pause.

Day 4.

I'm not actually sure about either version here, but I like the colours and the general mood of the outfits so it's a good start. It's a bit too much princess considering Seren isn't really a princess. Tomorrow I'll be drawing a real ocean princess, Mona.

Mermay 2025 Day 3

Here's Seren. She's outgoing, super smart, and she always thinks she knows best, even when she's wrong. She hates being wrong. Though she's younger than Nei, she's a bit of a prodigy and is only one grade below him. She also surfs.

Day 3.

Seren has a sportier look that's still very girly. She likes whimsy and fun but isn't an all out fashionista. She also has many practical gadgets and accessories, like her G-Shock watch, her sandals, and her satchel. She combines girly trinkets (from when her mum was still around) and the more boyish things like baggy pants, neutral shirts, etc. from her brother, Nei.

Mermay 2025 Day 2

On day 2, I finally draw a mermaid! It's Nei's mermaid form, his motif is clouds but I feel like it doesn't really translate. It's ironic, Nei is a spiky, angsty guy and the fluffy cloud is his spiritual item thing. I'm going to be honest, I'm not very happy with the two outfit variants at all but I did finally find him a hair cut that works. We re-watched Fern Gully today and I think I was nodding along when Zak was on screen which probably influenced Nei's hair.

Tomorrow I will be introducing a new character, Seren, who is Nei's more upbeat younger sister.
